I have no idea about this debate but I just wanted to recommend you a Swiss restaurant in Antoni M. Claret called "Basilea". It's a cosy place specialized in "fondues", "raclettes", etc.
Switzerland is one of the most beautiful places I've been to. I have found the people to be polite, friendly and rather discrete. What I found strange about the Lausanne and the surrounding area was that the streets were deserted after 6 pm. Bars and restaurants tend to be half-empty, even on a Saturday night. Apparently, the Swiss do most of their socialising and entertaining at home. So, that explains the deserted streets. I'm much more used to sociable Spain which is why I have this opinion of Lausanne. However, I've also been to Berne many times and that is a different story entirely. You'll find the capital to be a much more vibrant experience.
Berne is a lovely place . I've also been in Zurich and it has an important social life , specially in summer time. Geneve an Laussane are a little boring .
The only place I've visited in that country is Lugano. I found it very pretty, clean but maybe a little boring. It happened last summer when I travelled all around the north of Italy. Lugano is a picturesque city where everything seems to be in the correct place.
I have travelled around Switzerland several times. I've visited Berne, Zurich, Geneve, Lausanne, Lugano, Basel, Lucerne... but which I prefer most is the German part, specially Basel. I have read all your opinions to come to the conclusion that Switzerland has everything. I you want peace, you have peace; I you are looking for social life, you have it too. And everything is so clean, so beatiful, so well ordered... I reassert: Switzerland is wonderful!
